HENRY GEWANTER OF POSITIVE PROFILE:
PERVERSION OF THE QURAN IS THE CAUSE OF EXTREMISM AND DISTURBING BELIEFS.
Terrorist outrages now seem to be a common occurrence. The media and general public rightly ask how people could carry out such horrific acts.
One brave British Muslim, Paigham Mustafa, who remains the only person to be issued with a fatwa by Islamic leaders in a western country, is still willing to speak out with the answer that Islam has been hijacked by those more interested in wealth and power than the true message of the Quran.
Mustafa has spent more than 20 years researching the original Arabic text, translating the Quran using the correct root word meanings and has discovered that many beliefs are not based on the Quran but instead are supported by spurious interpretations called ‘hadith’, a set of writings falsely attributed to Muhammad but dating back to the ninth century some 200 years after the event.
As Mustafa explains: “Strictures regarding how women should dress and behave as well as the demonising of homosexuality, the widespread practice of polygamy, and a ban on alcohol are not justified according to the strict word of the Quran.
“Rather, they were created by a conservative religious establishment aimed at ensuring social control and the subjugation of women. Until these issues are addressed by mainstream Islam, extremism will continue to flourish.”
Mustafa added: “Governments in the UK and other western countries are seeking to engage with so-called ‘moderate’ Muslim leaders to tackle extremism but, in many cases, they are part of the problem. These community leaders are shaking hands with politicians while, behind their backs, are committed to doctrines of hate.”
Mustafa, says: “Generally translators of the Quran reflect traditional religious ideas onto the interpretations. This means that one word can wrongly be given several different meanings that enable it to be shoehorned to fit the prevalent beliefs. My exposition is based on the original Arabic and its rules of root words – the original meanings as used at the time when the Quran was first used, rather than since the ninth century, two hundred years later, when Islam came to be practised as a religion instead of the social system that it is. By doing so, all the fabricated concepts that were infused into it over time have been eliminated.”
The exposition, extensively annotated with references, is entitled ‘The Quran – God’s Message to Mankind’ and is published by [Xeitre-Signat]. Available from Amazon and the following website.

Author: Paigham Mustafa's exposition of the Quran is the result of over 20 years of research, translating the Quran from the original Arabic and exposing many widely held religious beliefs as perversions of Islam.
Fabrications by traditionalists and extremists include violence against non-Muslims and minority groups, honour killings, polygamy, intolerance of other beliefs and the oppression of women in society, the method of animal slaughter for meat, the ban on alcohol consumption and many other beliefs that are not justified according to the true meaning of the Quran but, rather, are comparatively modern constructs.
It is the author’s contention that, until these issues are addressed by mainstream Muslims, extremism will continue to flourish.
Other distortions of the Quran exposed in his book include:
1. Adultery: In the Quran there is no stoning as a punishment for anything, let alone adultery. In the case of a wife being accused by her husband, it is the wife's testimony that has greater weight.
2. Alcohol: There is no mention of alcohol in the Quran. What it does mention is 'khamr' meaning intoxicants, which includes drugs like morphine. The abuse of intoxicants is discouraged but the proper use of any drug or intoxicant is not forbidden.
3. Amputation: The Quran does not decree amputations as a punishment. To 'cut off' a thief's hand does not mean to sever but to restrict the perpetrator's resources for committing such a crime. The connected verse and statement speaks about repentance, which really means is that those who lapse into criminal activity should be assisted in returning to a good and useful life.
4. Apostate: The Quran guarantees freedom of belief. Nowhere in the Quran is there a decree that says apostates must or can be killed.
5. Charity: The Quran advocates dignity not charity. The Quran decrees social welfare (it is up to governing bodies how they establish this is in their own system) so that everyone can have an equitable life. Banking based on religion and termed as 'Islamic banking' can also be shown to be usurious and not fair banking. In fact it is actually destructive - totally against Quranic principles of fair trading.
6. Divorce: There is no instant divorce - usually declared by announcing 'I divorce you' 3 times. Many women are victims and the sharia law endorses this method. The Quran, however, prescribes a procedure that includes a reconciliation period to allow the couple time to reconsider.
7. Fasting: The word 'saum' is usually mistranslated as fasting, the abstinence from taking food and drink. The example of Mary, mother of Jesus, shows that she established 'saum' then ate and drank. This alone negates the idea of a fast as meaning to abstain from food and drink.
8. Food: Only four foods are restricted and not dozens or scores as the traditionalists would have people believe. Furthermore no specific method of
slaughter has been prescribed and the inhumane method used to kill animals is a ritual not found in the Quran. The 'halal' word, which means permissible is widely abused and has been turned into a multi-billion pound industry to the detriment of all communities.
9. Hijab: This is the head covering and a burka is the covering of the whole body, except the eyes. There are several variations to this. None of these are in the Quran, so instead of banning them it would be easier to argue that they are cultural and not Islamic. In the Quran it is the disbelievers who cover themselves. Examples of believing women freely mixing with men without any type of veil or purdah are frequently given in the Quran.
10. Honour killings: The Quran gives examples of women who freely mix with men, speak to them and even one who chooses her husband. So the killing of innocent young girls who want to choose their own husband is repugnant. Women, according to the Quran can meet, work and travel with other men without any stain on their character.
11. Infidels: The word infidel is a very misleading translation of the words kafir (disbeliever) and mushriq (traitor). A disbeliever is one who rejects the Quranic values and traitor is one who opposes sovereignty, in this case the sovereignty of God. Neither of these people should be killed unless of course they take up arms to destroy the peace and security of a community. In contrast to this the hadith literature falsely attributed to Muhammad clearly say that people who merely deny God and his messenger should be killed. Is it any wonder that traditional hadith advocates feel no sympathy or remorse when innocents are killed by suicide bombers?
12. Khilafat: The idea of a khilafat or an Islamic State (such as envisaged by ISIS) is not in the Quran, neither is a sultanate or a republic. These are innovations and not referred to in the Quran. Muslim leaders after the messenger created their political structures based on the principles of Permanent values and Absolute laws; rights, obligations, justice and truth as defined in the Quran. Therefore the ideal should be NOT be an Islamic State but the state of islam, i.e. a state of harmony: peace and security.
13. Murder: the Quran strictly forbids the killing of one believer by another believer yet we see Shias and Sunnis murdering each other on a regular basis simply because they do not accept each other as Muslims. The Quran also forbids the making of sects. In contradiction the hadith traditions say there must be at least 62 sects.
14. Suicide: The Quran encourages life enhancing universal values not only for the individual but also for communities and nations. The killing of innocents and aggression of any kind is strictly forbidden. The Quran decrees that believers should treat their enemies in a way that they may become friends. This is not peace at any price but to live exemplary lives so that others may see the value in good actions. However, the hadith doctrines encourage profanities and the killing of disbelievers with the lure of 72 virgins in heaven. Such bizarre beliefs are the basis of religion for the traditionalists.
15. Pilgrimage: There is no pilgrimage rite to Mecca in the Quran. This
mistranslation has led to a £19 billion tourist industry controlled by the Saudis. The word 'hajj' means to take the challenges of life that grow and develop the human Self - not the performance of a rite or ritual of any pilgrimage.
16. Polygamy: One verse from the Quran has been mistranslated to accommodate plural marriage; one man many wives. The Quran does not forbid polygamy but discourages it on the basis that it may be to the detriment of a previous marriage.
17. Prayer: The Quran says it is the good action that rescinds the bad action, not prayer or any other ritual. The 5 times a day ritual prayers are there to keep the masses uselessly busy and prevent them from dealing with the real problems of life.
18.
19. Racism: The Quran tells us that people are different so that there is variety and identity, whereas the hadith are openly racist and government policies in 'Muslim' countries show this.
20. Sharia law: The demand for sharia law is not only in other countries but also comes increasingly from Muslims in the UK. Sharia means way or method and certainly Shariat-ullah (the ordinance of God) is mentioned in the Quran but this is nothing to do with the sharia from the cannons of hadith literature wrongly attributed to Muhammad. The hadith sharia has the killings, prohibitions, food and dress decrees and numerous laws harmful to a free society and these decrees are not found in the Quran. Also such a legal system will be an injustice to the vulnerable who without proper legal representation may be coerced into accepting decisions that are against their best interests.
21. Temporary marriages (prostitution) and marriages to pre-pubescent girls is encouraged by the tradition and culture of sharia law. The cannons of hadith literature have an example of Muhammad marrying his wife Aisha when she was supposedly 6 years old and the marriage was consummated when she was 9 years old. The principles of marriage and divorce in the Quran do not permit temporary marriages and the conditions for a proper marriage contract cannot be met by an individual who is not yet both mentally and physically mature, therefore both these fabrications are in direct in conflict with the Quran.
22. Women: the Quran gives women an extremely important and honorable role in life. But in the spurious hadith they are no more than chattel slaves and compared to dogs and donkeys. All this misogyny is in the hadith and these books are replete with examples.
23. Islam as a deen: Sunni Muslim, Shia Muslim and Ahmadi Muslim. What's the difference? They are all beliefs that contradict the Quran while thinking they alone have the true version of Islam. Even believing there is a moderate Islam, conservative Islam or a radical Islam is wrong. Islam is not a religion but a social system. Islam is from the Quran alone and anything else is not Islam. However it is true that Islam is radical (as opposed to radical Islam) in the sense that the Quran instructs believers to initiate sweeping changes to improve mankind's situation and move it forward to a better future. Concepts in the Quran seek strict disciplinary measures but to say without evidence that they are cruel and oppressive is unjust. There is only ONE Islam and ONE group of people who are Muslim: those who follow the values and laws in the Quran alone. The purpose of Islam is to develop and improve the individual - i.e. Self-Development, because if individuals are good then society is also good.
